Are the Las Vegas Raiders eyeing Mike Tomlin as a potential head coach replacement for Pete Carroll?

The Las Vegas Raiders thought they found the perfect spark when they hired Pete Carroll. A seasoned leader with a championship pedigree, Carroll arrived to steady a franchise that has spent years searching for consistent ground. Instead, the season has unraveled quickly. At 2-10, the Raiders look flat, frustrated, and far from the competitive identity they hoped to build.

Last year’s late push under Antonio Pierce had players and fans believing that a strong foundation was in place. Carroll was expected to elevate that momentum. Instead, the team has slipped backward, and the reality of coaching the NFL’s oldest head coach at 74 years old has become impossible to ignore. Rebuilds take time, and time is not a luxury Carroll has.

With frustration rising in Las Vegas, the conversation around the team has shifted. Attention is now turning toward a name that carries both credibility and intrigue: Mike Tomlin.

Recent reports around the league suggest that Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers might be heading toward a mutual split. After 18 consecutive non-losing seasons, Tomlin’s résumé is as strong as any coach in modern football. Yet even the NFL’s most respected figures sometimes reach a point where a new environment makes sense. Analysts at outlets like ESPN and NFL Network have noted multiple times that long-tenured coaches often benefit from a fresh start, citing examples such as Andy Reid’s move to Kansas City.

If Carroll is indeed out in five weeks, the Raiders’ next coach could be inheriting the skeleton of a competitive roster, along with an opportunity to target one of next year’s top quarterback prospects

Kristopher Knox, Bleacher Report

According to Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, if Tomlin becomes available, the Raiders could be one of the most attractive landing spots. Las Vegas currently projects to hold the fourth overall pick and has one of the largest cap-space totals heading into next offseason. The idea of pairing a top young quarterback with a proven coach is understandably appealing.

The Tom Brady factor complicates the picture for the Raiders

There is, however, a potential obstacle that could give Tomlin pause. Knox points to the presence of Tom Brady, the team’s minority owner, whose level of involvement has generated plenty of discussion. Tomlin has spent his career with Art Rooney II, an owner known for keeping a light touch. Multiple reports from The Athletic and other outlets have questioned how active Brady plans to be in football decisions. For a coach who values autonomy, that dynamic could matter.

Another question is whether Tomlin represents a significant upgrade over Carroll. Both coaches have similar track records over the past decade, although Tomlin’s age, 53, gives him a longer runway. Even so, with the league trending toward young offensive minds, the Raiders might ultimately prefer to go in a different direction altogether.
