Antonio Brown’s lawyer formally requests that the attempted-murder charge against him be dropped

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown has filed a motion seeking the dismissal of the attempted-murder charge hanging over him, a crime that could carry a sentence of up to 30 years. The 37-year-old former NFL player was accused last May of shooting a man during a celebrity boxing exhibition held in Florida.

Brown was extradited from Dubai, where he had been staying, to face the second-degree attempted-murder charges brought against him. His attorney is arguing that the shooting was lawful under a 2005 Florida state statute known as the Stand Your Ground law, which establishes that:

A person is justified in using or threatening to use force, except deadly force, against another when and to the extent that the person reasonably believes that such conduct is necessary to defend himself or herself or another against the other’s imminent use of unlawful force.

The events involving Antonio Brown

According to the arrest affidavit, Brown allegedly grabbed a gun from a security guard and fired two shots, based on what authorities stated at the time. The attorney later countered that this was untrue, asserting that the former NFL player used his own weapon and was not aiming it at anyone.

The man who reported the attack, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, said that one of the bullets grazed his neck. It was later revealed that the two men had a prior history, which may have heightened the tension leading up to the incident.

In 2022, in Dubai, Nantambu allegedly stole jewelry from Brown, an act that resulted in a 30-day jail sentence. Later, at the Rolling Loud music festival, he reportedly attacked Brown while the former player was on stage next to one of his sons.

The same individual was later arrested for waving a Palestinian flag during the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, where he had been working as an extra.

Antonio Brown was released on a $25,000 bond and was ordered to wear an ankle-mounted satellite tracker so authorities could monitor his movements. Meanwhile, his legal team stated that he had the:

Legal right to defend himself.

And that the action he took was justified because the person provoking him:

Intended to cause him serious harm.

More information will surely emerge regarding Antonio Brown’s case, as he continues to navigate a turbulent period in his life from which he has struggled to break free.
