Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, among other NFL teams, Antonio Brown appeared in a Florida court as part of ongoing proceedings in an attempted murder case that could result in a prison sentence of up to 30 years.
It is worth recalling that this situation stems from an incident that occurred during an event in South Florida, where Brown allegedly drew a firearm and, according to the alleged victim, attempted to kill him with it.
The incident took place in May 2025. Shortly thereafter, the former wide receiver relocated to Dubai, but United States authorities extradited him in November, and since then, he has faced the charges before the court.
Brown pleaded not guilty during his hearing. Through his legal team, led by attorney Mark Eiglarsh, he later requested a travel permit on his behalf.
In that filing, Brown’s attorneys stated that he needed to be allowed to travel to Tampa for several “scheduled business arrangements.” Authorities initially denied the request, but Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez ultimately approved the travel and also ruled that the GPS monitoring device Brown wears could be removed during the trip and reattached upon his return to Miami.
Concerns about the former Steeler fleeing the country were significant, particularly given his prior departure to Dubai. Nonetheless, the request was granted without major complications.
The court document authorizing the trip explains that Brown intends to participate in several business commitments with Energetic Exotic, a leading luxury and exotic car rental company in Florida.
It also notes that he has scheduled music recording sessions, making the authorization essential. His attorneys further clarified that Brown would be staying at his Tampa Bay residence during the permitted travel.
Antonio Brown’s lawyers sought dismissal of the attempted murder charge
In December 2025, Antonio Brown’s attorneys sought dismissal of the attempted murder charge against their client, basing their argument on Florida’s self-defense law.
A video presented to the court showed the former player running toward a fight at the event while holding a firearm. Brown later claimed he was defending himself against an alleged jewelry thief named Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu.
The situation is complicated by the fact that Brown and Nantambu, a jewelry designer, had previously experienced tensions in their relationship. Nantambu publicly denied Brown’s claims.
According to the alleged victim, Brown ordered security personnel to attack him while the former Pittsburgh player ran to retrieve a firearm and then returned to the scene.
Nantambu told the Daily Mail that a bullet grazed his neck and that he also suffered a fractured finger during the altercation.
Attorney Eiglarsh acknowledged that his client retrieved a gun and fired two warning shots in a direction away from Nantambu to ensure no one was harmed.
Brown hoped the warning shots would deter Nantambu’s aggression, allowing Brown to safely reach his vehicle and leave the scene.
Brown was initially allowed to leave the scene, though an arrest warrant was later issued in June 2025. The two men had also been involved in an altercation backstage at a concert in Pittsburgh in 2023.
