Following a boxer’s win in the ring, no matter the opponent, the situation calls for celebration. Surviving going toe-to-toe with another hungry opponent is always a good reason to celebrate; even more so when that opponent is Jake Paul, and he just helped you make a fortune. That was supposed to be the plan for Anthony Joshua.
Following his knockout win over Paul, Joshua decided to head to Nigeria to spend the New Year with family. AJ is of Nigerian heritage, spent some time living there when he was younger and has worked on community projects in the country. His visit turned tragic before the year turned, though, as Joshua was a passenger in a car crash that took the lives of two of his friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. It’s of course been an utter shock for AJ and the families of both victims.

Joshua recently posted a picture alongside some of their family members, and on Thursday he fully broke his silence with a heartbreaking statement and admission: “I didn’t even realize how special they are.”
As the saying goes, “you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone“. That rings true for Joshua, who notes that despite being constantly around his two friends in their day-to-day lives, he never truly appreciated that he was “in the presence of great men”. Despite the loss of his friends, Joshua is more worried about their families.
Boxing is clearly the last thing on Joshua’s mind at the moment, as he continues the grieving process. Recent rumors have a possible retirement on the cards for AJ, and this emotional situation could be the thing to push him in that direction.
