The long-awaited heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury has suffered a new setback. Just when it seemed that the chances of them meeting in the ring were being revived, they could be once again separated because injuries do not let them go.
The functions this weekend of Fatal Fury in New York and in Riyadh, brought together a large number of stars from the boxing world, one of them was Anthony Joshua, who traveled to Saudi Arabia to witness Canelo Alvarez against William Scull for the undisputed super middleweight title.
While Joshua was in Riyadh, he gave an interview to journalist Claudia Trejos, and when asked about when he would return to the ring, he confessed that he underwent surgery on his elbow that will keep him away from training for a few weeks, so his return suffered a new delay.
“Whenever they want me to go back. I’m trying to get my physicality back,” Joshua said, adding: “I actually had a little bit of surgery on my arm, my elbow. A little bit of surgery in May. I’m just kind of working on that. That kind of threw me back a bit. That will keep me out of the gym for about six to eight weeks and when I’m healed up, I’ll be back.”
With the physical problems of Joshua at 36 years of age, and doubts about Tyson Fury’s continuity in boxing, it is ideal that both are in the best possible shape to confirm their duel, which would paralyze the United Kingdom and would be the most important British boxing fight in recent years.
Does Tyson Fury plan to fight Anthony Joshua?
Regarding Tyson Fury’s retirement announcement last January, Queensberry CEO and promoter Frank Warren is hopeful that he can return and the fight can be finalized.
“But it’s never too late. Who knows if Tyson decides he’s fed up with mowing the lawn, it could happen,” Warren said last February.
The fight between Joshua and Fury has been close to being finalized on other occasions, but the deal was not closed. In 2021 it seemed the great opportunity for that fight, as Joshua had the WBA, IBF and WBO titles, and Fury was the WBC heavyweight champion.
If ‘Gipsy King’ stands firm with retirement, the possibility will remain complicated, regardless of AJ’s injury delay, but promoters are still hopeful that he will return to boxing and an agreement can be reached to see these two heavyweights together in the ring.
