Andy Reid reassures the Chiefs after Patrick Mahomes’ injury

The Kansas City Chiefs have started the 2025 NFL season with more doubts than certainties. After falling to a concerning 0-2 with losses to the Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, Andy Reid’s team is looking to bounce back in Week 3, when they visit Russell Wilson and the New York Giants in the highly anticipated Sunday Night Football.

Despite the results, Patrick Mahomes showed flashes of his usual level in the loss to Philadelphia. The quarterback recorded 187 passing yards with one touchdown pass and one interception, along with 66 rushing yards and another score on the ground. However, Kansas City’s offense has felt the absence of two key pieces: wide receivers Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, whose absence has limited the explosiveness of the passing game.

Mahomes raises concerns for the Chiefs

During the game against the Eagles, Mahomes suffered a wrist injury on his throwing arm, which raised alarms in Kansas City. Considering the quarterback is a three-time Super Bowl champion, the team doesn’t want to take unnecessary risks. In fact, Reid’s plan has been to take every precaution to ensure his quarterback is fit to compete at the highest level.

The good news for Chiefs fans is that Mahomes has remained active throughout the week. Andy Reid spoke to the media on Friday and gave an encouraging update: the initial swelling in the wrist has gone down, and the quarterback has been able to practice normally. All signs point to him being available to face the Giants in New York.

“It was something that happened during the game against Philadelphia, but we managed to reduce the swelling,”Reid explained, highlighting that Mahomes participated in every practice session.

Mahomes, used to playing through pain

It’s no surprise that Mahomes keeps going despite the discomfort. Last year, he played most of the season dealing with an ankle issue and didn’t miss a single game because of it. In fact, the only regular season game he didn’t play was in Week 17, when the Chiefs had already secured the top seed in the AFC.

With an unexpectedly rough start, Kansas City heads into the next game with the urgency of securing its first win of the year. Mahomes’ presence will be crucial not only for the team’s morale but also to keep alive their hopes of remaining title contenders in the 2025 NFL season.
