After the resounding victory of the Boston Celtics against the Golden State Warriors (120-99), Jaylen Brown, one of the stars of Joe Mazzulla’s team, admitted that he uses astrology and numerology to communicate better with his teammates, a leadership attitude he would have adopted after Jayson Tatum’s injury.
The forward explained that getting to know the rest of the team is essential: “I learned so much about each and every one of our guys. Even about astrology, and about pretty much everything. I learned what communication styles work best for each person and started using them when I talk to each of them.”
“I started using that technique when I talk to each of the guys. We were suggested to do it, to see if it worked. Everyone has a different personality and way of dealing with things. If you learn a little bit about each one, about what motivates them, you can figure out how to maximize their potential. All of that built up over the course of the season. And here we are,” he explained.
“I didn’t know if it would work before the season started, but it definitely works,” he said, explaining what each of his teammates is like: “Neemi is from the Year of the Rabbit, so his communication is different from D’ White’s, who is from the Year of the Dog. So his communication style is different. Hugo is also from the Year of the Dog. Payton is from the Year of the Tiger. JT is from the Year of the Tiger. Ron is from the Year of the Dragon. Joe is from the Year of the Dragon. Nikola is new to our team; he is from the Year of the Horse. Right now it is the Year of the Horse.”
Joe Mazzulla on Jaylen Brown: “It’s something he’s taken very seriously”
For the coach, Brown is a fundamental pillar of the team, especially after winning the NBA title in 2024. He is currently averaging 28.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game, the best of his career
“Jaylen’s approach to leadership this year has been to get to know his teammates: understand how to motivate them, understand them better and communicate better with them. It’s something he’s taken very seriously, his leadership off the court,” Mazzulla said.
