All the candidates being mentioned to replace Mike Tomlin with the Steelers: the complete list

There is no longer a perfect duo between the Pittsburgh Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin. In 2026, the long and now legendary run of the coach with the franchise came to an end. They spent 19 seasons together, practically a lifetime. However, there are moments when change becomes necessary and even unavoidable.

That moment arrived after the Steelers were defeated by the Houston Texans in the wild card round this past Monday, January 12, 2026. It was not only a loss, but a humiliating one. That game marked Tomlin’s farewell from the team he loved and defined the closing of an era in Pittsburgh.

Mike Tomlin had not won a postseason game since 2016, and that reality likely exhausted the patience of the front office, which ultimately decided to change direction heading into the 2026 season. Despite consistent regular-season success, the lack of playoff victories became an increasingly heavy burden.

The now former Pittsburgh coach made several playoff appearances during his tenure. In nearly two decades leading the team, he never posted a losing season. He reached two Super Bowls and won Super Bowl XLII, achievements that cemented his legacy within the organization.

With his departure, a successful chapter closes and also marks the end of only the third head coach in franchise history. Before Tomlin, the Steelers were led by the legendary Chuck Noll and later Bill Cowher. Now Pittsburgh begins the search for just its fourth head coach since 1969, a testament to the patience this franchise traditionally shows its leaders.

Arthur Smith emerges strongly, the Steelers’ offensive coordinator

Smith brings experience after spending three years as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Over the last two seasons, he served as offensive coordinator under Tomlin, earning two playoff berths in that span. He knows the organization well and would represent a smooth internal promotion.

Mike McDaniel gains traction after his dismissal from Miami

The former Miami Dolphins head coach has generated interest across the league as either a head coach or offensive coordinator. Pittsburgh could be seeking a rookie quarterback to build around, or even a return of Aaron Rodgers. McDaniel’s offensive development skills make him appealing.

Brian Flores, defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings struggled more offensively than defensively in 2025. Flores left a strong impression in Minnesota and could now move into a larger role. He would restore Pittsburgh’s hard-nosed defensive identity and previously worked with Tomlin in 2022.

John Harbaugh, the eternal rival

For years he was Pittsburgh’s greatest rival. Now available, Harbaugh has quickly become an option, despite rumors linking him to Atlanta or the Giants.

Other coaches mentioned as Tomlin replacements include:

  • Klint Kubiak
  • Chris Shula
  • Kelvin Sheppard
  • Robert Saleh
  • Jessee Minter
