Despite a rocky start to 2026 with AC Milan, Christian Pulisic continues to be considered the great figure of the USMNT ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The American striker started the season strongly in Serie A and remains Milan’s top scorer in the league with eight goals. However, his performances have lost consistency in recent weeks.
- He has missed seven Serie A matches.
- He has not been a starter in his most recent appearances.
- He is coming off an injury that kept him out of action.
The last time Pulisic started for Milan was on January 18, 2026 against Lecce. Since then, he has been absent while players such as Christopher Nkunku have gained prominence and minutes.
Alexi Lalas backs Pulisic
Amid the concerns of some fans, US soccer legend Alexi Lalas came to the defense of “Captain America” during his State of the Union podcast.
Although he acknowledged the striker’s poor form in Italy, Lalas made it clear that he has no doubts about his importance at the World Cup.
I just don’t worry about Christian Pulisic, as I think he’ll be there this summer and he’ll be the star we need
“He given his best for the national team over the years. I think he will do it again,” he added.
For Lalas, Pulisic’s track record in a USMNT jersey outweighs any momentary bumps at club level.
The 2026 World Cup as the ideal setting
With the World Cup taking place at home (United States, Mexico and Canada), the pressure on Pulisic will be greater than ever. However, it also represents a unique opportunity:
- Leading a talented generation.
- Confirm his status as a USMNT legend.
- Consolidate as a global figure.
Although his present at AC Milan generates debate, within the national team environment there is confidence that he will arrive in physical and mental fullness to the tournament.
Trust remains intact
Pulisic has shown on multiple occasions that he raises his level when he wears the national team jersey. For Alexi Lalas and many within the US environment, the striker will not only be at the World Cup…he will be the player who makes the difference.
The summer of 2026 is approaching, and all eyes are on the number 10.
