Alex Bregman, ruled out by Mets for various reasons: “It doesn’t make sense, there’s a limit”

With the deals for Pete Alonso in his return to the New York Mets and Jack Flaherty with the Detroit Tigers, the only free agent on the list of the most sought-after in the offseason is third baseman Alex Bregman, who has yet to decide his next destination with Spring Training underway.

Bregman rejected an offer from the Houston Astros of 6 years and $156 million, which was close to the 7 years and $189 million he is aiming for, so a possible return to the Texas team is still not progressing.

The list of suitors for the two-time All-Star is extensive and it is noteworthy that he has not yet secured the long-term contract he desires. Sportskeeda recalled that one of the teams that was mentioned during the winter market was the Mets, but according to sports commentator Evan Roberts, it does not make sense for general manager David Stearns to want to bring him to Queens.

“As far as Alex Bregman is concerned, we have to rule that out… A couple of things: first of all, Bregman, who is the last elite free agent left standing, has shown no interest in accepting a short-term contract with a high average annual value. Secondly, the Mets are already in the luxury tax, and I think there’s a limit,” Roberts said, adding another strong reason: “But they’re not going to give, say, $35 million a year to Alex Bregman. It’s a nice fantasy, but it’s not coming true.”

Cubs emerge as ideal landing spot for Alex Bregman

The Chicago Cubs became the first Major League Baseball team to open spring training to prepare for Opening Day against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Tokyo on March 18 and 19.

The Cubs already have Astros All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker, but they still seem to have gaps to fill and one of them is at third base, where Alex Bregman would fit perfectly.

A Bregman–Cubs partnership makes sense, as Chicago fans are craving a team that succeeds in the postseason after four consecutive seasons without October baseball, and Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer is not closing the door. “I wouldn’t rule anything out,” he said.

“You always look for opportunities. But right now, we’re going to have a meeting this afternoon, we’re going to focus on the guys who are in camp and that’s the plan,” Hoyer said.
