Alex Bregman could trigger a trade of Nolan Arenado from the Cardinals to the Yankees

Every action has a reaction, and the imminent arrival of Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros via free agency to the Boston Red Sox would have implications for another deal that was in suspense, that of the St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman Nolan Arenado, who believed he was set to land at Fenway Park.

Bregman was the better option for Boston

There’s many a slip twixt the cup and the lip, and for the Cuban-born baseball player there is now the option of looking further east, particularly to the Big Apple, where the Yankees would not mind having a quality third baseman after the departure of Juan Soto to the Mets and the large number of moves that has triggered in the Bombers’ roster.

It should be remembered that Alex Bregman accepted a deal with the Red Sox for six years, $170 million and buyout options, after the Boston team did everything possible to bring his trade with Arenado to fruition, but in the end the partial amount covering Arenado’s extension was not enough.

The Yankees step in

After the fiasco, the New York Yankees entered the fray and opened talks with the Cardinals for Arenado, as his win percentage above replacement is 2.5 in the just-ended season, so in conjunction with DJ LeMahieu he becomes a viable option despite his .272 batting average and .719 OPS.

And if we add to that the fact that injuries have not left the 36-year-old veteran infielder alone, the move that could turn Arenado into a ‘bomber‘ would be a matter of time and soon we would see him wearing the Yankees jersey.
