Adam Thielen and C.J. Ham sign one-day contracts to retire as Minnesota Vikings legends

A quiet afternoon in Eagan turned into a poignant moment for the Minnesota Vikings and their fan base Friday, as two of the organization’s most improbable success stories formalized their retirements by signing ceremonial oneday contracts with the club. Wide receiver Adam Thielen and fullback C.J. Ham, both undrafted and often overlooked early in their careers, now leave the sport as players officially enshrined in Vikings history.

The pair complete their journeys that started with tryouts and ended in long tenures as contributors and leaders.

Thielen, a Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, native, entered the league in 2013 after going undrafted out of Minnesota State University, Mankato.

After earning a practice squad spot and then working his way onto the active roster, he blossomed into one of the Vikings’ most reliable playmakers.

He earned back-to-back Pro Bowl nods in 2017 and 2018 and ultimately ranking among the franchise’s alltime leaders in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns.

Ham’s path was similarly improbable. A native of Duluth, Minnesota, who played Division II football at Augustana, he caught the attention of Vikings coaches during a pro day.

He later secured a roster opportunity that led to a decade with Minnesota as a full-back and special teams ace.

Known for his blocking, leadership, and teamfirst mentality, Ham made a pair of Pro Bowls and served as a captain, rare honors for a traditional fullback in the modern game.

Thielen releases emotional statement

Thielen marked the moment with a post on social media to confirm his retirement and one-day contract signing with the Vikings.

“What a ride it has been!” Thielen wrote on his Instagram Story in January when announcing his retirement from the NFL after 13 seasons, a message that resonated broadly with Vikings fans who saw in him a reflection of their own values.

Ham, who officially announced his retirement in early February after scoring a touchdown in his final regular-season game, similarly leaves behind a legacy of understated but impactful contributions.

Their simultaneous return this week to sign symbolic contracts ensures that their careers will always be tied to Minnesota, a meaningful detail for a franchise and fan base that prizes connection and community.

Iconography of perseverance in Minnesota football

For Vikings observers, the simultaneous honoring of Thielen and Ham was as much about celebration as it was about cultural affirmation.

Both players became symbols of belief in the face of doubt, not just for undrafted hopefuls, but for a fan base often defined by its longing for sustained success.

Thielen’s statistical legacy, over 700 receptions, nearly 8,500 receiving yards and 64 touchdowns in his NFL career, places him among the most productive undrafted players in league history.

It’s a fact that underlines how far he rose from his humble beginnings on special teams to become a household name in Minnesota.

During Thursday’s press conference, both men reflected on their careers with gratitude, memories of tough battles, and appreciation for the teammates and community that supported them.

They serve as reminders that, in a league increasingly driven by analytics and draft pedigrees, there is still room for stories of persistence and heart.
