Aaron Rodgers close to returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers; 4-Time MVP not retiring

A new controversy seems to be brewing for the Pittsburgh Steelers after Mike Tomlin stepped down as head coach following 19 years in charge. The team has decided to fill the vacancy with Mike McCarthy, aiming to restore one of the NFL’s most storied franchises to its former glory.

McCarthy is a coach with a long NFL career. His most recent head coaching stint was with the Dallas Cowboys, where he achieved three consecutive 12-win seasons (2021-2023)-a feat the franchise hadn’t accomplished since the early ’90s. However, his major challenge was failing to make a deep playoff run.

His greatest achievement came in Super Bowl XLV in 2010, when he led the Green Bay Packers to a championship, curiously defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers, his new team. His challenge with Pittsburgh will be to combine that experience with the team’s demanding culture and return the Steelers to elite status.

Mike McCarthy could target Aaron Rodgers’ return

Last season, the Steelers reached an agreement with Aaron Rodgers, who at 42 showed flashes of brilliance and led the team to the AFC North title. However, in the playoffs, he struggled against the Houston Texans, fumbling a ball and throwing an interception that were both returned for touchdowns.

After the season ended, reports suggested Rodgers would not return to Pittsburgh. But before heading into the offseason, it was reported that team leaders would not oppose one more season from the 4-time NFL MVP.

The possibility gains weight now that Mike McCarthy, who developed Rodgers into a future Hall of Famer in Green Bay, is back in the picture. McCarthy even left the door open, saying: “Definitely. I don’t know why you wouldn’t.”

It makes sense: the Steelers currently have Mason Rudolph and Will Howard, entering his second NFL season. Bringing Rodgers back for another year would not be a surprise. The only major question is the drama Rodgers might bring, as he has a history of stealing the spotlight.
