Being racist is becoming more and more costly in Spain, fortunately. A few hours ago, it was revealed the punishment that the Prosecutor’s Office is seeking for a Real Oviedo fan for making racist insults to Kylian Mbappe in the match played against Real Madrid on August 24 at the Carlos Tartiere.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office itself recognises as a mitigating factor that the fan was in a state of intoxication caused by the consumption of alcoholic beverages. However, this has not prevented the Public Prosecutor’s Office from requesting a one-year prison sentence and compensation of more than 2,000 euros from the French player himself for the moral damage caused.
The events to which the prosecutor’s office refers occurred around the 37th minute of the match, when the Real Madrid player scored the first goal of the match. In the celebration of the goal, the accused fan shouted these racist insults at the French footballer. In addition to these words, the fan accompanied them with gestures and sounds of a monkey.
The cameras of Movistar’s ‘El Dia Despues’ programme captured everything that happened and the fan was totally exposed on social media. From then on, a large number of media outlets picked up on the story. These events, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, “had a worldwide impact, with more than 305 million views worldwide, with the consequent increase in the feeling of humiliation for the player“
