The fairytale rise of Joaquín Panichelli has met a cruel conclusion just as the striker was on the precipice of global superstardom.
The 23-year-old, whose 16 league goals for RC Strasbourg Alsace have electrified French football this season, was confirmed to have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during a final training session with the Argentina Men’s National Team.
The injury occurred on Thursday in Prague, as the Albiceleste prepared for a scheduled friendly against Mauritania.
For Panichelli, the diagnosis is a haunting echo of his past; this marks the second time the Córdoba-born forward has faced a ruptured cruciate ligament, having previously overcome a similar injury to his left leg during his tenure in Spain two years ago.
