Former NBA player Isaiah Rider, known for his electrifying playing style in the 1990s, has been arrested for the second time this month, according to TMZ.
Arizona authorities confirmed that Rider was taken into custody for failing to appear at a scheduled court hearing related to a protective order.
“An individual named Isaiah Rider was arrested earlier today on a warrant for failing to appear at a court hearing on December 15,” police told TMZ. Rider was booked and processed at the Gilbert-Chandler Unified Holding Facility.
This arrest follows his previous encounter with the law on December 4 in Gilbert, Arizona, when he was charged with one count of interfering with judicial proceedings. The initial arrest stemmed from allegations made by his wife, Vanessa Rider, who had sought a protection order earlier this year.
Protective order dispute
Vanessa Rider filed for the protective order in July, citing multiple instances of hostile behavior from her husband. Court documents reported by TMZ include allegations of Rider threatening both Vanessa and their 15-year-old son.
In one instance, she claimed Rider said, “You’re gonna get your ass slapped,” and, “Shut the f*** up before I kick this door down and whoop you.”
Rider has publicly denied these allegations, maintaining that the protective order was a response to a contentious divorce process following his filing in November 2024.
“I deny the allegations,” he stated, according to TMZ. “She did this because I filed for divorce.”
The protective order issued in July required Rider to avoid any contact with Vanessa and their son and to stay away from their home as well as the child’s school. However, Rider has contended that he only received official paperwork for the order in December, which may have contributed to the missed court date.
Earlier this week, a hearing was scheduled to review whether the protective order should be extended. Vanessa attended the hearing, and the judge ultimately approved the continuation of the protective order, reinforcing the restrictions against Rider.
These recent legal issues have added to a string of off-court challenges for Rider, whose basketball career once reached remarkable heights, including being a first-round NBA draft pick and winning a championship.
While fans remember him for his athletic achievements, his current struggles shows the difficulties some athletes face in life after professional sports. Authorities have not yet provided details on potential next steps following Rider‘s latest arrest, leaving the situation unresolved as he faces ongoing legal proceedings.
