$6 million thrown away! Pete Carroll fires offensive guru Chip Kelly amid the Raiders’ disaster

At long last, changes have arrived for the Las Vegas Raiders, although for many, they come far too late. What matters now is that the franchise is finally being addressed after a string of disastrous results that pushed Pete Carroll to part ways with Chip Kelly.

Kelly arrived in Las Vegas this 2025 season alongside Carroll and quarterback Geno Smith. However, the team endured nothing but hardship under his direction as offensive coordinator. After the game against the Cleveland Browns, the news of his dismissal broke.

With his departure, the hope is that the team can shift in a new direction and at least close out the remaining stretch of the year in a respectable manner, offering a few modest satisfactions to fans who continue showing up at every home game to support them.

Chip Kelly was the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL

The Las Vegas Raiders sit dead last in points scored, with only 15. And with a quarterback whose performance is a calamity each week, the situation grows only more dire. He has been unable to improve, and his production remains abysmal game after game; nevertheless, Pete Carroll continues to back him unwaveringly.

I spoke with Chip Kelly earlier this evening and informed him of his release as offensive coordinator of the Raiders.”… “I would like to thank Chip for his service and wish him all the best in the future.

That is what Carroll said regarding Kelly’s firing.

Eleven games marked the duration of his stint with the Raiders, leaving them with a dismal 2-9 record and no clear indication of how they might find their way back to winning form this season. His performances have been disastrous, to say the least.

Chip Kelly had a $6 million contract that made him the highest-paid offensive coordinator in the NFL, yet across eleven games, he failed to find any way to lift the Raiders’ level.

No interim replacement in sight for the Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders head into this week preparing to face the Los Angeles Rams without an offensive coordinator, as the team has not announced who will assume the role, even on an interim basis, for the upcoming matchup.

Kelly’s dismissal, who had joined the staff with Carroll during the offseason, comes shortly after the departure of special teams coach Tom McMahon, who was let go in early November.

Kelly spent 2024 as offensive coordinator of the Ohio State Buckeyes, leading them to a championship that year. He then accepted the Raiders’ offer for his first NFL experience in that position, one that ultimately turned disastrous for him.

Kelly’s situation had become untenable. His first touchdown of the game arrived with only a little more than five minutes left in the final quarter against the Browns, a contest that saw Shedeur Sanders make his first NFL start and earn his first win.
