Christian McCaffrey capped off an impressive 2025 season with a rare achievement in NFL history, earning nominations for three of the league’s top awards: MVP, Offensive Player of the Year, and Comeback Player of the Year.
McCaffrey‘s journey this season was especially remarkable considering he missed most of the 2024 campaign due to injury.
Returning to full form, he became a cornerstone of the 49ers‘ offense, contributing heavily both as a runner and a receiver.
His efforts helped him secure spots alongside only two other players who have ever been finalists for all three awards in the same year: Adrian Peterson in 2012 with the Vikings and Joe Burrow in 2024 with the Bengals.
A standout season after a major setback
Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football offered additional perspective on the rarity of this achievement.
“Drew Brees finished 2nd in all three of these in 2006 after returning from shoulder surgery. But I don’t think they announced finalists back then. Still ridiculous Brees wasn’t the Comeback Player that year because he never technically missed a game,” he noted on social media.
McCaffrey‘s 2025 season showcased his ability to carry an offense almost singlehandedly at times.
Even in the face of injuries to other key 49ers players, he remained a reliable weapon on the ground and through the air, proving he was a candidate not only for Comeback Player of the Year but also for Offensive Player of the Year and league MVP.
The NFL will announce the winners of these awards in early February, giving fans and analysts plenty of time to speculate on whether McCaffrey‘s historic season will translate into hardware.
Regardless of the outcome, joining Peterson and Burrow in this elite group cements McCaffrey‘s 2025 campaign as one of the most memorable comeback stories in recent league history.
