After ‘Canelo’ Saul Alvarez’s unexpected defeat to Terence Crawford, the boxing world is still wondering what his next step will be. Now, the president of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mauricio Sulaiman, has appeared to share his feelings about Canelo and what lies ahead for him in 2026.

After the humiliation suffered by the once great champion and best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Canelo Alvarez, he is now preparing to return to the ring in 2026, so Mauricio Sulaiman is attentive to what lies ahead, as he considers that it will be key to his career, especially after losing all his belts as super middleweight champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), World Boxing Association (WBA), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO).

Mauricio Sulaiman expects a great 2026 for Canelo Alvarez

This comes after Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent was revealed, which is good news, as it is important that he can get back on track in front of the fans who have supported him in recent times, which is considered important by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman

“It’s a key year for Canelo Alvarez and his destiny… Canelo will always have the doors open to the World Boxing Council. He is ranked number one, he suffered a defeat last year, he took a break and had an operation, but we will know what his future is very soon. He will definitely always have the support of the World Boxing Council,” said Mauricio Sulaiman, at the Martes de Cafe, during this January 6, 2026.

Who will be Canelo Alvarez’s next opponent in 2026?

Once Terence Crawford’s retirement took place, the boxing world is now preparing for a new episode, where Canelo Alvarez remains in the conversation, especially given the lucrative deal he signed with Turki Su Excelencia Al-Sheikh.

It has been reported that the International Boxing Federation (IBF) has ordered Canelo Alvarez to have his next opponent, according to journalist Carlos Ariel Linares, who claims that it would be the Cuban Osleys Iglesias, in a fight to be held during 2026.

How many more years will Canelo Alvarez remain active?

In addition to this, at 35 years of age, Saul Alvarez himself admitted in an interview with legendary former soccer player Hugo Sanchez that he plans to continue putting on the gloves for at least another four years.

“From the age of 28-29, at this age is where I felt best. I always said that at 37 is a good age to enjoy what I have done with my family, other things in my career and that’s what I say; but I said I would debut at 18 and I did it at 15,” Canelo Alvarez told ESPN at the time.

Canelo Alvarez wants to fight at the Estadio Azteca before retiring

But before thinking about leaving, Canelo warned that he first wants to organize a fight in Mexico’s largest sports venue, the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. “Yes, I would like to fight at the Estadio Azteca. I would love to have a fight before I retire at the Azteca,” said Canelo Alvarez about the last moments he plans for his successful sporting career.
