A lot of history has a chance to be made when it comes to the MLB MVP awards this season.

Let’s check out the odds for the AL and NL MVP race at FanDuel Sportsbook as of Aug. 5.

AMERICAN LEAGUE MVP

Yordan Alvarez: -1500 (bet $10 to win $10.67 total)
Junior Caminero: +700 (bet $10 to win $80 total)
Ben Rice: +2700 (bet $10 to win $280 total)
Bobby Witt Jr.: +6500 (bet $10 to win $660 total)

WHAT TO KNOW: We’re going to have a new AL MVP, as two-time defending MVP Aaron Judge has battled injuries all season long. The name atop the board is Houston’s Yordan Alvarez, who (as of Aug. 5) is leading the AL in batting average (.329), home runs (35), hits (136), RBIs (85), on-base percentage (.442), slugging percentage (.640) and OPS (1.083). What’s it called when you lead a league in every hitting category? Just two weeks ago, Alvarez was at -165, and now his odds have surged to -1500. It’s Alvarez’s race to lose.

NATIONAL LEAGUE MVP

Shohei Ohtani: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total)
Pete Crow-Armstrong: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total)

WHAT TO KNOW: Ohtani — you have company. Just a few weeks ago, the Dodgers’ superstar was -1500 to win his third straight NL MVP and his fourth straight overall. But as of Aug. 5, his odds have fallen to -110, with PCA closing the gap and pulling even at -110.

Over the last three days, PCA and the Cubs swept the Dodgers in Chicago. In the series, Crow-Armstrong was 6-for-13 with two homers and five RBIs, briefly taking the top spot on the NL MVP oddsboard on Wednesday afternoon. However, Ohtani answered with a two-run blast in the eighth inning, shifting the odds back to level. Ohtani had two home runs on Wednesday and was also 6-for-13 from the plate in the series.

Crow-Armstrong is leading the NL in WAR (6.95), and has 26 home runs and 28 stolen bases. Last season, Ohtani won back-to-back NL MVP awards for the first time since Albert Pujols did it in 2008 and 2009. He also won the AL MVP in 2023, making him the first player in MLB history to win MVP back-to-back in each league. This year, if Ohtani is to win NL MVP, he will tie Barry Bonds’ record of four straight MVP wins (2001-2004). All four of Ohtani’s MVP wins so far have been unanimous, with him receiving all 30 first-place votes. He has the second-most MVPs in history, trailing only Bonds’ seven. After their back-and-forth showdown at Wrigley Field this week, Ohtani and PCA have turned the NL MVP race into a historic two-man battle.
