Zyon McCollum re-signs with the Buccaneers for $48 million, cementing his position as a defensive leader

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have secured one of their most promising players just before the start of the 2025 season. Cornerback Zyon McCollum signed a three-year, $48 million contract extension, with $35.4 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. With this deal, McCollum will remain tied to the franchise through the 2028 season, solidifying himself as a key piece in the secondary.

The move comes just days before the Buccaneers’ Week 1 debut, when they will host the Atlanta Falcons in a divisional matchup that promises intensity. For the front office, locking in McCollum represents a strategic investment in the defense, a unit looking to take a step forward after a solid 2024.

Zyon McCollum is an important piece

At 26 years old, McCollum is preparing for his fourth NFL season, all with Tampa Bay. His progress has been steady, and last season marked his breakout. In 2024, he recorded the first two interceptions of his career and set personal bests in nearly every defensive category: 17 passes defended, 82 combined tackles (55 solo), and 17 assists.

These numbers reflect his impact on the field and explain why the Buccaneers decided to secure his future. His ability to cover receivers, break up passing plays, and contribute to the run game makes him a complete cornerback, capable of leading the secondary against increasingly explosive offenses.

Buccaneers aim to repeat as NFC South leaders

Tampa Bay is coming off a 2024 season in which they finished with a 10-7 record, enough to claim first place in the NFC South. The challenge now is to stay on top in a division that grows more competitive each year. Defense will be key for the team to pursue a deep playoff run, and McCollum is emerging as one of the natural leaders of that mission.

With his contract secured and the coaching staff’s confidence, the cornerback will have the opportunity to confirm his development and become one of the league’s most respected defenders.

Week 1: Buccaneers vs. Falcons

Tampa Bay’s first test will be this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, a divisional rival that always presents an extra challenge. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST, in what is expected to be a close and rivalry-filled matchup.

With McCollum at his peak and a motivated team, the Buccaneers enter the 2025 season with renewed hopes and the goal of proving that their recent success was no fluke.
