Zach Lowe shakes up the NBA with a potential Lakers-Rockets trade following Fred VanVleet’s injury

Fred VanVleet’s ACL injury has disrupted the Houston Rockets’ plans for the 2025-26 season. Amid this scenario, renowned NBA insider Zach Lowe floated a trade idea involving the Los Angeles Lakers that could completely alter the course of both franchises.

Speaking on Bill Simmons’ podcast, Lowe suggested that Austin Reaves could be an appealing piece for the Rockets as they look to replace VanVleet as a secondary playmaker. The comparison to Tyler Herro’s role with the Miami Heat was immediate: a shooting guard capable of creating offense without being the primary ball handler, yet still impactful within the system.

Austin Reaves, the key piece in the Lakers-Rockets trade

The proposal sparks interest not only for what Houston could gain, but also for what the Lakers might receive in return. With LeBron James entering what could be his final NBA season and Luka Doni emerging as the new face of the Lakers, Reaves’ role continues to raise questions.

Lowe laid out the scenario: what if Reaves doesn’t adapt to coming off the bench, if extension talks stall, or if he simply doesn’t feel valued in the Lakers’ new project? In that case, sending him to Houston could be a tempting alternative for both sides.

LeBron James’ future weighs on every Lakers decision

Another factor putting pressure on the Lakers’ front office is LeBron James’ contract situation. The NBA icon is heading into his 23rd season, possibly his last with the Lakers. His agent, Rich Paul, was clear: the focus shouldn’t be on speculating about the future, but on enjoying and maximizing LeBron’s present.

That present, however, forces the Lakers to surround him with the best possible talent if they want to contend for a championship. And that’s where a move like the one Lowe suggests becomes relevant. If the 2025-26 season gets off to a rough start, the front office may have to consider bold options in the market.

Will the Lakers dare to move Reaves?

The hypothetical trade between the Lakers and Rockets reflects the tension both franchises are experiencing. For Houston, VanVleet’s absence leaves an immediate void that someone like Reaves could fill. For the Lakers, the equation is more complex: sacrificing youth and long-term potential in exchange for short-term reinforcement around LeBron.

The upcoming season will dictate the path forward. If the Lakers start strong, Reaves could solidify himself as a key part of the project. If not, the scenario proposed by Zach Lowe could shift from mere speculation to a real decision for the Lakers’ front office.
