Youngster makes Yankees debut and earns another chance in rotation, confirms Aaron Boone

The losing streak of the Yankees is beginning to affect them in the standings, as they are now in second place behind the Blue Jays, three games ahead

This is largely due to the multiple injuries he has suffered throughout the season, which is why the New York team continues to adjust its rotation.

This time, the focus was on the MLB debut of Cam Schlittler, a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher who, with just five starts at Triple-A, was called up to fill a vacancy in the rotation.

As for his performance, his first outing was not impeccable, but it was solid enough to earn him a second chance after the All-Star break.

How did Cam Schlittler perform?

On Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, Schlittler pitched five innings in which he allowed three earned runs, four hits, walked two and struck out seven.

Among his highlights was his first major league strikeout, against none other than current MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh. In addition, his fastball reached 100 mph and induced nine swings and misses, five of them with that same pitch.

The rookie also picked up his first Major League win in the Yankees‘ 9-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners. For manager Aaron Boone, the young man’s performance was enough to confirm him in the rotation, at least for one more outing after the All-Star break.

His manager, Aaron Boone, praised Schlittler for the composure he showed in such a demanding setting:

It’s his first start. He’s going to get another chance. I see a lot of potential

Cam Schlittler is an American football player who plays as a quarterback for the Boston College Eagles in the NCAA

Cam Schlittler is a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher, born on February 5, 2001, in Walpole, Massachusetts. He played college baseball at Northeastern University, where he excelled with a 2.67 ERA and 180 strikeouts in 182 innings. He was selected by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 2022 draft

The young prospect was forced to make his debut earlier than expected, this being his first game with the Yankees, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing three runs and striking out seven opponents, including three against home run leader Cal Raleigh, reaching his maximum velocity at 100 mph. An experience that was described by Schlitter himself as a “dream come true”.

The inclusion of Schlittler is partly in response to the urgency facing the Yankees rotation following the loss of Clarke Schmidt, who will undergo elbow surgery that will sideline him for the remainder of the year. That is why this young Yankees prospect’s good debut is more than just good news, it is a possible salvation for a second half of the season that looks to be even more complicated.
