Yankees urged to get revenge on Mets by signing Pete Alonso

The rivalry between the Yankees and Mets is one of the most important not only in baseball but in sports in general, so after Pete Alonso’s decision to try his luck in free agency, the name of the powerful hitter is already beginning to be heard in the Bronx.

Now, while the Yankees celebrate their return to the postseason and the Mets come to terms with another failure, the question arises: would Alonso be the perfect reinforcement for the Yankees?

Pete Alonso’s revenge for Juan Soto signing

Last winter, the Metsmade waves by landing Juan Soto thanks to a record 15-year, $765 million contract, a move that was interpreted as a direct blow to the Yankees.

However, baseball goes around and now it could be the Yankees who ‘laugh last’. To begin with, they secured a ticket to the playoffs, while the Mets were eliminated after a painful defeat to the Marlins.

In addition, the possibility has now opened up for the Yankees to sign Pete Alonso, as the slugger confirmed that he will explore the market as a free agent

Would Pete Alonso play for the Yankees?

Analyst Dan Plesac did not hesitate to give his opinion on MLB Network: “The Yankees lost Soto to the Mets. If you look at the Yankees first base, Pete Alonso would look good in that uniform, hitting 35 home runs and driving in over 100 runs”.

Plesac’s words ignited debate on social media and among the specialist press, who imagine what Alonso could bring to the most powerful offense in the league.

In 2024, Pete Alonso struggled to find a contract and ended up signing a two-year, $54 million deal with the Mets, under a “prove it on the field” scheme. The result left no doubt:

  • 38 home runs
  • 126 RBIs
  • .871 OPS

Alonso reaffirmed that he is one of the most consistent producers in MLB, capable of delivering in key moments.

Do the Yankees really need him?

Although the idea of signing Alonso sounds attractive, the reality is that the Yankees do not have an urgent need at first base. The team’s offense was the most productive in the entire league in 2025, with 849 runs scored and a difference of 30 home runs over the second best team.

In addition, young Ben Rice has responded solidly, hitting 24 home runs, 63 RBIs and a 2.8 WAR this season. Under club control until 2031, Rice has proven to be a versatile piece between first base and catcher.
