Despite showing flashes of brilliance in his recent outings,New York Yankees rookie starter Will Warren remains a big question mark for Aaron Boone in the context of the starting rotation, which began the season with absences from Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil.
Warren has potential
The Brandon, Mississippi native has begun to be the answer in certain moments of doubt for the Bronx Bombers, and that is why he remains in the rotation with an ERA of 5.65. However, he is not the solution that the team is looking for in the medium term, as he has not finished establishing himself, regardless of the great moments he has shown in the seven starts he has had this season.
In his first start, he achieved a valuable victory, his first in the Major Leagues, against the San Francisco Giants on April 12 after pitching five innings in the rain, a day in which the Yankees won 8-4.
Warren’s recent ‘complications’
However, in subsequent outings Warren has struggled and has allowed multiple runs, and it is well known that this is not forgiven in the Yankees’ environment, as is happening to star closer Devin Williams, or paradoxically, as is also happening to Aaron Judge for the simple fact of dropping a ball in the last game against the San Diego Padres.
And proof of this is his recent outing against the Tampa Bay Rays in which he allowed five runs (three earned) in 4 2/3 innings, which triggered the Yankees’ 7-5 loss, a second consecutive series loss to American League East rivals, after the defeats in Baltimore.
The Yankees’ problem is that they require some certainty for the fifth spot in the starting rotation and the closest thing they have at hand is Warren, who with all his inconsistencies is the least bad, and to get his salary that does not reach a million per season is a must in the Bronx Bombers.
Necessity is the mother of reality and Warren is scheduled to start Friday against the Athletics at Raley Field in Sacramento.
