Yankees start off 2025 the same way they ended 2024: With bad news on injury front

The New York Yankees weren’t littered with injuries during last year’s postseason, but they weren’t at full health either. They lost key relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga for the year early in the season. Anthony Rizzo missed the ALDS due to finger fractures and was never back to his real self in the World Series.

Nestor Cortes wasn’t available until the World Series and he gave up a walk-off grand slam in Game 1 to Freddie Freeman. Jake Cousins dealt with an injury leading up to the postseason and struggled once he came back in the postseason. So it was imperative for the team to start 2025 with a clean bill of health. But that’s already not the case, as Giancarlo Stanton is a real doubt for the start of the season due to tendinitis in both of his elbows.

Stanton’s injury history has been extensive, to say the least. Since 2019, Stanton has only played in 505 out of a possible 870 games. He has dealt with hamstring, knee, quad, calf and countless other issues.

He was able to stay healthy for the entire 2024 postseason and really stood out in the middle of the Yankees lineup, slugging seven home runs and hitting .273. New York needs him healthy for the playoffs more than anything else.

Stanton isn’t the only injured outfielder, either. Trent Grisham is still rehabbing from a pulled hamstring that happened a few weeks ago. He should be ready soon, as should Stanton, but it’s not an ideal situation with the start of spring training nearing.
