Yankees set terms for Cody Bellinger: Will he re-sign?

The New York Yankees have entered the offseason with an unusually quiet approach, leaving the Winter Meetings without having spent a single dollar on new talent so far.

Despite this inactivity, one major story dominating their offseason discussions continues to be centerfielder Cody Bellinger, and what it would take for the franchise to bring him back to the Bronx.

After an impressive 2025 season with the Yankees, Bellinger decided to opt out of the final year of his contract, becoming a free agent and immediately emerging as one of the most sought-after players available. He slashed .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs, demonstrating his value as a left-handed bat capable of producing both power and consistency.

His versatility in the outfield and ability to deliver in key moments have made him an attractive target for multiple contenders.

His agent, the influential Scott Boras, confirmed that several teams around the league are interested in signing him this winter. Teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Angels have all been linked to Bellinger at various points.

The number of interested teams highlights Bellinger‘s status as one of the most valuable free agents on the market. Despite this wide attention, the Yankees remain central to the discussion, highlighting the mutual interest between player and team.

Yankees face contract standoff with Bellinger

At the heart of the talks between the Yankees and Bellinger‘s camp is a disagreement over contract length. Reports indicate that the Yankees have proposed a five-year agreement, while Boras is pushing for a seven-year deal for his client.

While financial specifics have not been disclosed, the difference in contract duration has become a sticking point. The Yankees are reportedly standing firm on their offer, signaling a commitment to fiscal prudence and long-term roster flexibility.

This standoff highlights the challenges New York faces in balancing the desire to retain a key offensive contributor with the need to maintain payroll flexibility. The Yankees have to consider the value of keeping a proven All-Star against the potential long-term commitment and financial implications of a seven-year contract.

Meanwhile, Bellinger‘s camp is likely looking at the broader market to determine the best combination of term and value for the player.

As the offseason progresses, both sides have room to negotiate, and the coming weeks will likely determine whether the Yankees can secure Bellinger‘s return.

Retaining Bellinger could solidify the team’s lineup and signal their continued pursuit of championship aspirations, making this offseason saga one of the most intriguing storylines in the MLB.
