Yankees’ performance raises concerns ahead of playoffs

The New York Yankees fell 6-3 in their game against the Boston Red Sox. At first glance, it was a close game, tied until the sixth inning before Boston put an end to it. But a deeper analysis reveals a more troubling pattern for New York. This team is unreliable on defense.

The Yankees committed four errors in the loss. Only three of Boston’s six runs were earned, meaning the Yankees’ pitchers were theoretically quite solid all around. Still, nine walks put runners on base, which in turn set the defense up for bad luck.

Numbers that deceive

However, while the Yankees’ defense leaves much to be desired, they are far from the worst defensive team, even if the number of errors tends to pile up at particularly inopportune moments, such as a rivalry game against the Red Sox, who, it should be noted, have a worse defense than the Yankees, although their errors are at less decisive moments. This has cost them to be the worst team in MLB in terms of errors per game.

There is some comfort in the fact that Boston is somehow even worse. But for a Yankees team so mired in chaos and inconsistency, it’s hard to imagine this glaring weakness proving insignificant in the postseason.
