Yankees make Gerrit Cole announcement after latest pitching move in loss to Phillies

The New York Yankees officially moved Gerrit Cole to the 60-day injured list before their 8-7 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Yankees blew a seven-run lead in the ninth inning, suffering a tough loss to the Phillies on Saturday afternoon. But beyond the late-game collapse, their biggest concern remains the growing uncertainty in their starting rotation.

Carlos Carrasco promoted to fill Gerrit Cole’s void

The six-time All-Star will miss the first few months of the 2025 season as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery, leaving a major hole in the Yankees’ rotation.

The Yankees have already sought a replacement, calling up veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the void in the rotation.

After the defeat, the Bronx Bombers wasted no time in making adjustments to the roster, restructuring their minor league roster. They reassigned right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer, right-handed pitcher Geoff Hartlieb, outfielder Ismael Munguia, outfielder/infielder Andrew Velazquez and left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny to minor league camp.

While the Manhattan Mules search for temporary solutions to Cole’s absence, 2024 American League Most Valuable Player Aaron Judge made his stance clear. In an interview with Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Judge emphasized that a pitcher of Cole’s caliber simply cannot be replaced.

“You can’t replace a Cole. You can’t replace a Luis Gil. But I think we have some young guys who are going to step up. We still have a good team here,” Judge said

The New York franchise suffered a major blow this spring, losing key pitchers such as Cole and Gil from its rotation. With the start of the season approaching, the team will have to rely on new faces to keep the strength from the start.
