Yankees lose another figure: Giancarlo Stanton goes on the disabled list for 60 days

The New York Yankees announced Thursday that they have sent their designated hitter, Giancarlo Stanton, to the 60-day disabled list and claimed outfielder Bryan De La Cruz off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.

Stanton, 35, has not been able to play in the 2025 season due to tendinitis in both elbows. While the five-time All-Star participated in batting practice with his teammates last week for the first time this season, his condition has not improved and he does not have a specific date to return to the team’s lineup

According to his medical report, Stanton is recovering from tears in the tendons of both elbows, which caused the tendinitis, but he is expected to be able to hit again in June

Stanton is in his eighth season with the Yankees. Last season, he hit 27 home runs and drove in 72 runs in 114 games and was instrumental in the postseason, hitting 15 hits, including seven home runs, and 16 RBIs, which allowed the Yankees to play in their first World Series since 2009.

Who will replace Giancarlo Stanton during his injury?

Meanwhile, the Yankees sent De La Cruz, 28, to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. De La Cruz hit .191 in 16 games this season with Atlanta. He has a .251 batting average with 58 home runs and 208 RBIs in 491 games with the Miami Marlins (2021-24), Pittsburgh Pirates (2024) and Braves.

His best season came in 2023 with Miami, when he hit .257 with 19 home runs and 78 RBIs in 153 games.
