The pain of the recent sweep suffered at the hands of the Miami Marlins was still fresh, but the New York Yankees suffered another open wound after letting a victory slip away against the Texas Rangers. On Monday night, at Globe Life Field, the bullpen failed again and Devin Williams was the protagonist of the most recent collapse.
Max Fried, the Yankees starter, did not hide his frustration after the game: “It’s simple. This is a results business. We’re not getting it done, and we need to do something now to turn things around.” The loss extends the Bronx Bombers’losing streak to four games in a row.
Max Fried demands changes
Although Fried also had a tough outing – allowing four earned runs in five innings on eight hits and three walks – the bullpen remains the main target of criticism. And rightly so: what seemed to be a quiet night fell apart in the latter part of the game.
The Yankees had taken a 3-0 lead early in the game and regained the lead with a two-run homer by Giancarlo Stanton. But in the ninth, with only two outs to go, Joc Pederson came on as a pinch-hitter and tied the game with a home run off Williams. Then in the 10th, Josh Jung buried their hopes with a three-run homer off Jake Bird.
The Yankees have blown a lot of saves
The statistic is striking: according to FanGraphs, the Yankees have blown more saves than any other team in the last 14 days. This collapse leaves them with a 60-53 record, 5.5 games out of the American League lead, held by the Toronto Blue Jays.
The pressure is mounting in the Bronx, and Max Fried knows it. Frustration is running high, and if the Yankees don’t react soon, the season could slip through their fingers.
