It is a fact that the New York Yankees have not done everything expected of a franchise with their history and that they have just lost the World Series, neither in free agency, nor with prospects or scandalous signings, but they do boast a couple of things, and they are two high-quality arms like Max Fried and Gerrit Cole.
Cole, with his numbers down, but with his talent intact at 34 years of age and with a wise decision to his credit by “regretting” going to free agency despite his $324 million, nine-year contract, has embraced the left-hander Fried in an unbeatable way in the franchise’s summer camp in Tampa, Florida
In their differences of style and character, each has found a good complement and this has been noticed in the team dynamics during practice in recent days, as they have in common a great talent and the desire to make the Yankees overcome the blow that was to have lost last year’s Fall Classic with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“I’m going to absorb what I can” Max Fried on Gerrit Cole
Max Fried signed with the Yankees last December from the Atlanta Braves and Cole immediately got in touch with him, not without first finding out about his background, on and off the field, with one of his former teammates in Georgia.
And chemistry was there, or at least that seems to be the case in the comments of both to the media covering the Yankees’ evolutions at their camp at Steinbrenner Field: “To be able to sit and watch him work, his routine and the way he prepares, I’m going to do everything I can to absorb everything I can. At the end of the day, we’re here to win. Anything I can learn from him that I can add to my game, I’m all ears,” said Fried, who signed with the Yankees for eight years and $218 million.
“Max Fried is a unique talent”: Gerrit Cole
Gerrit Cole was no less flattering with his new teammate and when the media asked him for his first impressions after working in practice, he referred to the left-hander: “Just a great addition. He’s a unique talent, an outlier in several ways and a very well-respected teammate as well. It’s been fun to get to know him through text messages and talking on the phone during the offseason and then the five or six days that I’ve been here as well. It’s been a pleasure to watch him do his job,” he said.
