The terrible tragedy at the ‘Jet Set’ nightclub in the Dominican Republic caused pain and sadness also within MLB, after it was revealed that three members of his family died in the collapse of the roof of the aforementioned place.
Among the victims reported by the authorities in Santo Domingo, it was reported that in the collapse of the building were Octavio Dotel, former pitcher of the New York Yankees; Tony Blanco, former player of the Washington Nationals; as well as Nelsy Cruz, sister of seven-time All-Star Nelson Cruz.
Before the collapse, renowned merengue singer Rubby Perez performed on stage at the nightclub. Unfortunately, he was also initially rescued by paramedics alive, but his condition worsened and he died.
Yankees send condolences
In the face of the grief that overwhelms the Dominican people and the world of MLB, the Yankees expressed their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of all the victims of the collapse at the ‘Jet Set‘: “The Yankees mourn the passing of former Yankees pitcher Octavio Dotel and extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Octavio. Our hearts are with all those affected by the tragedy in the Dominican Republic,” the Bronx team said on its X account.
Dan Horwits, Dotel‘s agent, commented on this incident and said: “The BHSC family is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Octavio Dotel. His energy, positivity and enthusiasm for life was infectious to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
For his part, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred issued his words for those affected by this tragedy in Santo Domingo. “Major League Baseball is deeply saddened by the passing of Octavio Dotel, Tony Blanco, Nelsy Cruz and all the victims of last night’s tragedy in Santo Domingo.”
