Yankees go all-in on World Series champion’s son

If surprises are the order of the day, the New York Yankees gave one this offseason with a move that is causing debate among fans. They signed pitcher Ryan Weathers in exchange for four prospects. In this way, the franchise has acquired the heir of a former champion with New York, David Weathers. The surname is respected and carries weight in the Bronx. David won the 1996 World Series against the Braves. Ryan, his son, joins the Bombers from the Marlins, something that does not please many fans, because his signing jeopardizes the roster and rotations for the 2026 season.

According to reports, Brian Cashman gave up a significant amount of prospect depth to get this deal done. And that’s what has upset many fans. Having struggled last season to cover injuries due to a limited roster, getting rid of much of his Plan B is risky.

In exchange for Weathers, the Yankees parted with Dillon Lewis, Brendan Jones, Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus. Craig Mish was the first to report the information about the minor league players involved in the trade

What is the underlying purpose of hiring Ryan Weathers?

The idea is for the left-handed pitcher to help stabilize the team during the early months as Rodon, Cole and Clarke Schmidt are scheduled to miss Opening Day while recovering from surgery.

Weathers is expected to slot in behind Max Fried in a rotation that would also include Cam Schlittler, Will Warren and Luis Gil. Ryan Yarbrough and Paul Blackburn are available as depth options. Additionally, Fried, Schlittler and Warren are coming off the largest workloads of their careers.

Yankees fans are upset

Weathers went 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in eight starts last season. This was his second consecutive injury-shortened year. He missed time with a left flexor strain and did not make his season debut until May 14. He was then out again from June 7 to September 11 with a left lat strain. Even in 2024, his season was also interrupted by a left index finger strain.

Knowing his background, Bronx fans do not understand the organization in its intention to hire a reliever with a load of injuries, poor performance, low effectiveness and no profile to be on a team like the Yankees. They express their anger with different opinions on social networks.
