Yankees forced to consider tough decision regarding Giancarlo Stanton’s role

The New York Yankees are facing a difficult decision concerning Giancarlo Stanton’s role on the team, and the options available to them are not ideal.

The situation has become more complicated following Aaron Judge’s recent flexor strain injury, which forced him to take on a designated hitter (DH) role upon his return. This has, unfortunately, left Stanton out of the starting lineup, as he cannot run or play the outfield due to his own injury history. Since Judge’s return, Stanton has been absent from the lineup for three consecutive games.

For the Yankees, ensuring that Judge is in the lineup every day is crucial. As a two-time AL MVP and currently in the running for another, Judge has been nothing short of spectacular this season, posting a .339 batting average with 37 home runs, 85 RBIs, and a staggering 1.149 OPS.

His presence in the lineup is non-negotiable for a team that is slipping in the standings, and his power is key to the Yankees’ offense.

However, Stanton has also been one of the Yankees’ most productive hitters in 2025. In 37 games, he has hit .268 with 10 home runs and an .868 OPS. While his role has been reduced, he has proven to be one of the league’s most reliable pinch hitters. Despite this, the Yankees are at a crossroads: how can they balance both Stanton’s potential and Judge’s need for a regular DH role?

Stanton was a key contributor to the Yankees’ World Series run last season. In the postseason, he slugged seven home runs, drove in 16 RBIs, and posted an impressive 1.048 OPS. His performance in October showcased just how important he can be when healthy, and many fans and analysts believe his presence in the lineup is necessary for any serious playoff contention.

The risk of moving Stanton to the outfield

As the Yankees sit at 61-54 and continue to fall further down the standings, they are faced with a tough decision. According to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner, manager Aaron Boone has suggested that Stanton may return to the outfield for this weekend’s series against the Houston Astros.

This could be the best way to keep both he and Judge in the lineup at the same time. However, this decision comes with significant risks.

Stanton has not played in the outfield since 2023, and given his injury history, placing him back in the field could increase the likelihood of further injury. This move is risky, but with the season on the line, the Yankees have little choice but to consider this option, at least until Judge can return to his regular outfield position.

In a season that is teetering on the edge of being lost, the Yankees need to maximize their chances of success. Keeping both Stanton and Judge in the lineup daily may be their best shot at turning things around and making a push for the postseason. Whether or not this risky move pays off remains to be seen, but the Yankees have no time to waste.
