Slugger Juan Soto had a very quiet night with his bat in his return to what was until last season his home. Meanwhile, Carlos Rodon won his fourth straight decision and the Yankees beat the Mets 6-2 in the first game of the Subway Series
Juan Soto had a quiet night as he only got three walks, a groundout and a fly out in his return to the Bronx. Meanwhile, Carlos Rodon won his fourth straight decision and the New York Yankees beat the Mets 6-2 on Friday night in the first of six Subway Series games this season.
The Bronx Bombers kept Soto and his bat quiet
Paul Goldschmidt drove in two runs and Cody Bellinger had three hits in front of a sellout crowd of 47,700.
Soto, who left the Yankees for a record $765 million, 15-year contract with the Mets, was loudly booed by the fans who stood up when he batted in the first inning. He responded by taking off his helmet, tilting it towards the crowd and touching his heart with it.
Rodon (5-3) allowed one run and two hits in five innings. Brandon Nimmo hit an RBI single in the fourth inning that drove in Soto.
Jonathan Loaisiga pitched a scoreless sixth inning, allowing just one hit in his first major league appearance since April 3 last year, after recovering from reconstructive elbow surgery. After Francisco Lindor’s two-out RBI double off Yerry De Los Santos, Luke Weaver retired Soto with a fly ball to center field with two on for his fifth save in six opportunities.
Goldschmidt put the Yankees ahead with an RBI single in a four-run third inning, when Lindor’s off-balance throw from shortstop bounced off the glove of first baseman Pete Alonso, causing an error that allowed a second run to score. Anthony Volpe added a sacrifice fly and Oswaldo Peraza drew a bases-loaded walk.
Tylor Megill (3-4) allowed four runs, four hits and five walks in 2 2/3 innings, his lowest of the season, falling to 0-2 in his last four starts, all Mets losses. He issued four walks in a 39-pitch second inning, and the five walks overall matched his personal best.
Left-hander Jose Castillo had yet to report to the Mets, who acquired him from Arizona on Thursday in exchange for cash.
Key moment
Lindor’s off-balance throw was his seventh error this season, five fewer than his 2024 total.
Key statistic
Soto’s walks were his best mark of the season.
Next
Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt (1-1, 4.73) and Mets right-hander Griffin Canning (5-1, 2.36) will start the second game of the series on Saturday.
