The New York Yankees are keeping the door open in the winter market with some gaps to fill on their roster. They are still missing at least one infielder, and new arms will always be welcome, for the rotation and the bullpen.
In pitching, they are still among the finalists for the Japanese jewel Roki Sasaki, while they need an infielder, and have in their sights the Venezuelan second baseman Luis Arraez, but negotiations to convince the San Diego Padres of a trade are stalled.
According to insider Jon Morosi of MLB Network, although it is still possible that the trade will take place, for now the positions are far apart, to keep the batting champion in the last three seasons, in which he has played for the Minnesota Twins, the Miami Marlins and the Padres.
Luis Arraez has one year left on his contract before entering free agency, where he would be highly coveted thanks to his batting prowess, although it would be a similar gamble for the Yankees to the one they had with Juan Soto, who was also with the Padres and after one season, turned down the offer of a long-term deal with the Bronx Bombers.
The Padres have internal problems
Sheel Seidler, the widow of the late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler, sued her brothers-in-law Matthew and Robert on Monday, seeking to prevent another brother, John, from taking control of the team instead of her.
The lawsuit comes at a time when the Padres are among the favorite teams to recruit Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki and his arrival could be complicated.
In a petition filed in the Travis County Probate Court in Austin, Texas, Sheel Seidler sued Matthew, who became executor of Peter Seidler’s estate last year, and Robert, the former executor. She alleged fiduciary breaches of trust, fraud, conversion and egregious acts of self-dealing.
The petition accused Robert’s wife, Alecia, of making “multiple racist, profane and hateful communications directed at Sheel, a woman of Indian descent.”
“The defendants’ actions to wrest control of the Padres were taken to force Sheel, a woman, an outsider and an Indian-American woman who is not of O’Malley descent, out of what Bob and Matt considered their family business and ancestral right,” the petition stated.
