Xavier Worthy forced Patrick Mahomes to step up – and the Kansas City Chiefs are in trouble

They say you’re only as good as your last game, and if we look back at what happened with the Kansas City Chiefs last season, it was simply disastrous. The Chiefs reached the Super Bowl for the third consecutive year, but were crushed by the Philadelphia Eagles, 40-22.

Of course, that dreadful Super Bowl won’t erase everything the Chiefs have accomplished since Patrick Mahomes arrived in 2017 – including three Super Bowl wins – but it is a clear sign that there are things to fix if they want to keep competing at the highest level, especially in the AFC.

Mahomes had a decent year in 2024, although for the first time since becoming the Chiefs’ starter, he failed to surpass 4,000 passing yards. He totaled 3,928 yards, 26 touchdown passes, and 11 interceptions. One reason for this drop-off was the lack of explosiveness in the offense – something the team hopes to recapture next season.

Xavier Worthy is going all-in for 2025

Last year, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Xavier Worthy in the first round. While he had plenty of talent – especially speed – the team didn’t expect him to become Mahomes’ primary weapon right away. But due to injuries to Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown, and Isiah Pacheco, that’s exactly what happened. And he didn’t do a bad job at all.

Worthy finished the season with 59 receptions and 6 receiving touchdowns, and he also ran for 3 more scores. Now, the receiver is putting in serious work with Patrick Mahomes to take a step forward in 2025.

“It’s simply about building that chemistry with Pat early on,” Worthy told Aaron Wilson of KPRC. “I had to get real game experience, and now I have it.”

During the Chiefs’ 10 organized team activities (OTAs), Worthy has looked different – physically stronger and in better shape – which could make him even more dangerous, especially now that Rashee Rice is also back.

“I’ve definitely gotten stronger, put on some weight,” said Worthy, who was the lightest wide receiver (165 pounds) at the 2024 Combine. “I’m excited to keep building that chemistry with Pat, like I said.”

“It’s just about moving forward and being willing to elevate our game,” Worthy added. “We’re going to get 1% better, so I’m glad we’re going after it and taking steps in that direction.”

For now, betting houses once again have the Chiefs as favorites to reach the Super Bowl – but it won’t be easy. Several teams in the AFC are right on their heels: the Ravens, Bills, Bengals, just to name a few.
