The Carolina Panthers’ Xavier Legette brought a peculiar gift to his teammates on December 26 as the 23-year-old wide receiver showed up with racoon meat, just a month after he first tested it himself.
Legette first tried the food for Thanksgiving, and since then it seems he has only been waxing lyrical about it and his position seemed to be instantly affirmed with the approval of the Panthers‘ squad that had some.
He then offered it to some of the media, who graciously accepted, after being caught off guard by the appearance of the product which resembled ground turkey or pulled pork rather than the animal native to North America.
“It ain’t gamey, it’s just good,” Legette told the curious people who gathered around to see the non-conventional approach to getting protein in for the day, which has also received the approval of some chefs too.
Andrew Zimmern previously told TMZ Sports that the food tastes good as the celebrity chef said it doesn’t taste like chicken, and possesses a unique flavor as he encouraged people to look for new options to try.
“People frown on folks like myself who regularly eat that animal,” Zimmern told TMZ. “Which is why I was so happy with what Xavier had posted.
“Quite frankly, I can cook chicken, pork, beef, lamb and all the other traditional animals as many ways as anybody I know. However, it certainly makes my diet more interesting.
“We have a lot of other things to worry about in this country. I say let people eat what they’re going to eat.”
Legette questionable for Week 17
Legette is a rookie from South Carolina who was selected as the Panthers‘ 32nd pick in the 2024 NFL Draft has impressed with a strong debut season at the Bank of America Stadium by making 439 yards and four touchdowns from 41 receptions.
But his side might need to do without him when they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 17 after he was listed as questionable in Thursday training due to a hip and wrist problem.
He has two more days to patch himself up before the clash on Sunday, December 29.
