The 2025 World Series is about to begin with the two best teams from the 2025 MLB season. The Los Angeles Dodgers arrive as two-time National League champions and in front of them are the Toronto Blue Jays from the American League to define the champion in a unique edition of the Fall Classic.
The Dodgers are in the World Series for the second year in a row, after starting the postseason from the Wild Card Series, but they have looked like a very solid team led by Dave Roberts that has lost only one game in 10 games played, including the sweep in the Championship Series to the Milwaukee Brewers.
On the other hand, Toronto began its road to the Fall Classic from the Division Series where it defeated the Yankees and in the American League Championship Series it defeated the Seattle Mariners in seven high-voltage games to appear in the final stage for the first time since 1993.
Now these teams face off in the best-of-seven World Series where they are not only looking for the championship trophy, but also a juicy amount of money that is shared with the winner.
How is the MLB World Series prize money distributed?
Each year, Major League Baseball (MLB) creates a special fund as part of the proceeds from playoff ticket sales and this fund is distributed to the teams that participate in the postseason, with a larger percentage going to the World Series champion, followed by the runner-up and so on.
The money comes directly from 50% of the gate receipts from the wild card games, 60% of the first three games of the Division Series and another 60% of the four Championship Series matchups. The organizations then vote on how many “shares” will be distributed among the entire franchise, including players, coaches and staff.
How much money does the World Series champion take home? Dodgers and Blue Jays are playing for more than just a title
To get an idea of the prize money at stake, it is important to look back at the 2024 World Series, where the Dodgers were the champions and received a pot of approximately $46.4 million, with each “share” in the locker room estimated to be worth $447,440.
But that’s not all, the loser, in this case the New York Yankees, received “equity” worth $354,571 for each member registered in their internal voting. That is why this year’s winner could take home a similar amount, all depending on attendance at the ballparks throughout the postseason.
Beyond the financial reward, the Dodgers are looking to continue to write their name in the MLB history books. If they win, they would win two consecutive titles, something that has not happened since the New York Yankees between 1998 and 2000. On the other hand, the Blue Jays reappear in the World Series for the first time since 1993, where they were also champions for the second consecutive year
The Dodgers and Blue Jays open the World Series on Friday, October 24 at 8:00 p.m. at Rogers Centre with Blake Snell opening for Los Angeles and Trey Yesavage for Toronto.
