WNBA championship contenders this season: the top 5 in the power rankings

The Las Vegas Aces were crowned WNBA champions in 2022 and 2023, ruling the courts as undisputed queens. Now, with A’ja Wilson entering her eighth season, she’s well-acquainted with the league’s ins and outs and hopes to lead her team back to the top. The three-time MVP has made it clear she’s committed to finding a way forward and keeping the Aces in the hunt for another title.

That’s when I have to be not just a vocal leader, but lead by example. I have to stay calm so my teammates know we’re good,”… “Even though the situation feels unfamiliar, I’m treating it as a great learning season for everyone.

Wilson said Sunday.

At the moment, the Aces sit around the .500 mark, a result of inconsistency throughout the season. Wins have been met with losses, preventing them from securing a spot at the top of the standings.

WNBA power rankings as of now

  • Minnesota Lynx

The Lynx are currently the best team in the league, holding a 14-2 record. Their second loss came just this past June 24. They also fell in the Commissioner’s Cup final on Tuesday, losing to Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever-even though Clark was sidelined with a groin injury.

For now, they look poised to continue dominating the league, especially with a full week of home games ahead: vs. WAS (July 3), vs. GS (July 5), vs. CHI (July 6).

  • Phoenix Mercury

The Mercury currently sit second in the league with a 12-5 record. Their six-game winning streak came to an end last Sunday at the hands of the Las Vegas Aces, but prior to that, they delivered some spectacular performances. Upcoming games: @ DAL (July 3), vs. DAL (July 7).

  • Atlanta Dream

With an 11-6 record, the Dream had a rough week, managing only one win in three games. On the bright side, Brionna Jones matched her season-high with 21 points against the Liberty-one of the few highlights in an otherwise tough stretch.

  • New York Liberty

After falling short of the Commissioner’s Cup final following a loss to the Indiana Fever, the Liberty may now be using this window to regroup and recover from the season’s demands. They’ll especially miss Jonquel Jones, who will be sidelined for several weeks with a sprained right foot.

  • Golden State Valkyries

This expansion team has outperformed expectations, putting together winning streaks that have earned them a spot in the league’s top five. Unfortunately, they’ll now be without key scorer Kyla Thornton, who sustained an injury against the Storm. Her return date is currently unknown.
