Wimbledon commentator upsets Trinity Rodman by bringing up her father: She doesn’t want him linked to Ben Shelton

The 2025 Wimbledon Championships have delivered more than just on-court action this summer, with a new controversy sparking headlines in the aftermath of Ben Shelton‘s four-set victory over Lorenzo Sonego.

While fans were keenly following the American’s progress, the conversation unexpectedly shifted to his girlfriend, Trinity Rodman, after a misstep by BBC tennis commentator Andrew Castle.

Castle, providing commentary for the match, repeatedly mispronounced Rodman‘s first name as “Tiffany.” Even more contentious was his choice to bring up her father, Dennis Rodman, a former NBA superstar, who has not been present in Trinity’s life for some time.

These comments did not sit well with Trinity, who was in the stands to support Shelton but soon found herself at the center of a media storm. Rodman quickly made her frustration known to her followers on social media.

In a post to her Instagram story, she clarified, “My name is Trinity for those who don’t know. Also, for Ben’s matches, he has his family there as his support system, which includes his dad.

“My dad’s not even in MY life, no need to bring him up during HIS matches when I don’t even want him talked about during mine. It’s him and his loved ones’ moment. Thank you.”

BBC Responds as Public Conversation Grows

The reaction was swift. The BBC issued an official statement, acknowledging the error. “Andrew apologises for mispronouncing Trinity Rodman‘s name during the Ben Shelton vs. Lorenzo Sonego match,” the spokesperson said.

The apology, however, did little to quiet the discussion online, where fans and observers debated the responsibilities of commentators to respect the personal boundaries of athletes and their families.

For Trinity Rodman, the incident highlighted a recurring issue for children of famous parents-unwanted association and comparison.

While Dennis Rodman is well known for his basketball exploits and colorful public persona, Trinity has made a name for herself in the world of soccer and prefers her achievements to stand on their own merit.

The Wimbledon gaffe reignited the conversation around respecting athlete privacy and allowing new generations to build their own identities, both inside and outside the sporting arena.

Shelton‘s focus on the court stands in stark contrast to the distraction that has come off it. For Trinity Rodman, the message remains the same: let the spotlight shine on the players and their performances, not the headlines of their personal lives.

As Wimbledon continues, both Rodman and Shelton will look to move past the off-court distractions and let their talent speak for itself.
