William Scull sends a message to Canelo Alvarez: “I want the belts”

It is no secret that over time and as Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s career in the ring has progressed, the hunger for victory has been gradually erased by the lust for dollars, and it is the Mexican fighter himself who has recognized this on more than one occasion.

His next opponent, Cuban William Scull, is clinging to this narrative, and although he will take home a considerable purse like all those who get into the ring with Canelo, he has made it clear that money is the least of his concerns, and has declared that he is motivated by something that is on the verge of extinction in modern boxing: superiority.

Jake Paul almost frustrates Scull’s dream

“I come for the belts,” said the boxer born in Matanzas, Cuba, trained in Argentina and living in Germany, when asked about his motivations to face the Mexican fighter who has shown hegemony by choosing his opponents, something of which Scull is part.

The fight that will unite him with Canelo’s history will take place on May 3 in Saudi Arabia and will be fought at the 168-pound limit. It was almost thwarted by an interfering Jake Paul, who wanted Canelo for the benefit of his narrative as a converted boxer. “When I was confirmed the news I could not sleep anymore. They woke me up at six in the morning (…) It was something we were waiting for after so many years. At the moment you get a lot of things in your head of everything you went through and what you have achieved. It has been a shock and I’m still recovering, but I’m already concentrating“, he told the Miami Herald.

“I want to give Canelo a great fight”

Being part of the Riyadh Season is a source of pride for the Cuban, as well as the prestige it will give his career to face the Mexican, even the money he will earn is a great boost for his career, but Scull makes it clear and states that he is not interested in that, as much as seeking to defeat the ‘almighty’ Canelo Alvarez and increase his resume that boasts an undefeated 22 fights with nine knockouts: “The purse is obviously what I need for myself and my family. I sacrifice for that. But I don’t look at the purse so much. I want to win the fight, give a great war. So they can see that William Scull always could. After that fight I want all the belts. I want to keep making history,” he concluded.
