Will the San Francisco 49ers risk Brock Purdy’s health in Week 3 clash against the Arizona Cardinals?

The San Francisco 49ers enter Week 3 of the 2025 NFL season with a 2-0 record, but injuries to key players have tempered the team’s early optimism. Despite the two wins the 49ers have faced setbacks, most notably the absence of tight end George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy.

Kittle suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1 that will sideline him for at least four games, while Purdy missed the Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints due to turf toe and a shoulder issue.

Initial assessments suggested that Purdy would be sidelined for at least two weeks, but head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a positive update on Wednesday, indicating that Purdy had returned to practice on a limited basis. This development signals progress in the quarterback’s recovery and raises the possibility of his participation in the 49ers’ Week 3 home opener against the Arizona Cardinals.

Purdy has been integral to the 49ers since stepping in as the team’s starting quarterback in 2022. He initially replaced Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo during periods of injury and quickly established himself as a reliable leader for the franchise.

Purdy’s contributions have been credited with stabilizing the team, and he earned a contract extension in the offseason that solidified his role as the team’s long-term quarterback. Under his leadership, San Francisco has achieved a 24-13 regular-season record, including an undefeated finish to the 2022 season and securing the NFC’s top seed in 2023.

Mac Jones was signed as backup during the offseason

The 49ers’ performance in the opening weeks of the 2025 season reflects both the team’s depth and resilience. The Week 1 victory at Lumen Field demonstrated the team’s ability to perform in challenging environments, even in the absence of key players.

Purdy’s temporary absence in Week 2 allowed Mac Jones to start against the Saints, but the team maintained its unbeaten record. Shanahan emphasized a cautious approach to Purdy’s return, ensuring that his recovery is carefully managed to prevent exacerbating his injuries.

Purdy’s potential return is especially significant as the 49ers await the recovery of other important contributors, including Kittle and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. A healthy quarterback, combined with returning skill-position players, could provide a substantial boost to the team’s offensive capabilities and maintain the early momentum necessary for a strong playoff push.

As the 49ers prepare for their home opener against the Cardinals, attention remains focused on Purdy’s recovery and readiness to play. His leadership and experience are central to the franchise’s strategy, and his presence on the field would reinforce the team’s offensive structure.

With key players returning and the quarterback showing progress in practice, the 49ers are well-positioned to navigate early-season challenges while pursuing their objectives for the 2025 campaign.
