Will the Mets try to go for Paul Skenes? An insider reports interest in a Pirates pitcher

Paul Skenes is considered one of the most promising pitchers in Major League Baseball

At just 23 years old, he has a 1.94 ERA and has accumulated 125 strikeouts in 116 innings this season. His dominance on the mound and his youth make him a coveted piece for any franchise.

What interest do the Mets have?

According to recent reports, the New York Mets have inquired about Skenes as part of their strategy to bolster the starting rotation. Although their farm system is strong in pitching, they would be willing to offer a combination of young talent and minor leaguers to try to convince the Pirates.

What does Pittsburgh say?

The Pirates’ management has been clear: Skenes is not available on the market. Although some analysts suggest they might consider a trade if they fail to extend his contract in the long term, for now the team has no intention of letting him go.

What has been proposed?

A hypothetical scenario suggests that the Mets could offer Jett Williams, Jonah Tong, Nolan McLean, Ronny Mauricio and Carson Benge. However, even this package might not be enough to convince Pittsburgh, given Skenes’ projection as a future Cy Young.

What do the experts think?

Analysts such as Jeff Passan have pointed out that if the Pirates cannot secure Skenes long-term, they should consider a trade before losing him in free agency. However, they also acknowledge that his current value is so high that few teams could pay the right price.

What’s next for the Mets?

With the trade deadline approaching, the Mets could continue to explore options. Although Skenes seems out of reach, his name will remain on the radar as the team looks to bolster its rotation
