Will surgery be necessary? Drake Maye breaks his silence about his shoulder injury

Amidst the sadness, there is still room for good news. After losing 13-29 to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, Drake Maye has received a welcome update on his health.

After admitting that he played in the Big Game under heavy painkillers to alleviate the pain in his throwing shoulder, he revealed on Tuesday that he will not need surgery.

Maye provides great health updates

Without a doubt, the Patriots quarterback’s shoulder was one of the most talked-about topics and uncertainties in the run-up to the Super Bowl.

However, after Sunday’s defeat, Maye not only pointed out that he took the field after receiving a painkiller injection, but also reassured Patriots fans by revealing that he will not need offseason surgery to treat his injury:

“Just get some time off. Time is the best healer,” Maye said. “Nothing that needs anything to be done. Just need some time away, time to get some rest and time away from football,” he added, according to CBS News.

In addition, Drake dispelled doubts and rumors that his pain was due to physical wear and tear and admitted that his pain did occur during the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos. There, New England won 10-7, but the 23-year-old quarterback fell on his right shoulder when he was tackled by safety Talanoa Hufanga, leaving him in constant pain.

His shoulder continued to bother him, and although his name kept him on the injury report throughout the week of training leading up to the Super Bowl, he was present at the team’s last three training sessions.

“It was unfortunate timing… the two weeks off were great to have a chance to be out there for my guys. You can’t blame things on injuries… It was just unfortunate it happened to be the throwing one, but at the same time, I could’ve prevented it or made more plays,” added the QB.

However, his shoulder pain was a prelude to greater pain: the defeat in the Big Game that left the Patriots just one step away from their seventh Vince Lombardi and becoming the franchise with the most Super Bowl wins..

The Seahawks’ pressure on the quarterback overwhelmed him all night, leading him to complete only 27 of 43 passes for 295 yards and 2 touchdowns, sacking him six times and forcing three turnovers (2 interceptions and 1 lost fumble). As if that weren’t enough, by being sacked 20 times in a single postseason, he broke the record set by Bengals QB Joe Burrow, who was sacked 19 times in the 2022 playoffs.

“It’s going to sting for a while, and I know it’s what makes this sport special. You come back, get a chance to take some time away, but not take too much time away because we were close, and you’ve got to try to find that extra edge. I know those guys in the locker room are going to try to find that,” he said.

Now, with surgery ruled out for his postseason, Drake revealed what he will do with his free time, besides recovering from his shoulder injury: “I have a beautiful wife, so I look forward to spending my offseason with [her]… that’s going to be the highlight of my offseason, I can tell you that,” Maye revealed.

Although the end of this season was not what Maye and the Patriots had hoped for, the 23-year-old quarterback completed 354 of 492 passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, leading the league in completion percentage (72%), yards per attempt (8.9), and passer rating (113.5). . He also contributed 450 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
