Cam Ward will begin his rookie NFL season without a safety net. The Tennessee Titans newcomer faces an unexpected challenge now that his projected backup, third-year quarterback Will Levis, will miss the entire 2025 season due to shoulder surgery.
Levis’s first two years in the league showed promise. Selected with the 33rd overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Kentucky, Levis debuted in Week 8 of the 2023 season when Ryan Tannehill went down with an injury.
He started eight games that season and was named the starter for 2024. However, in Week 4, Levis sustained a Grade 2 shoulder strain and has since struggled with recovery. With Ward slated to start, Levis and the organization were forced to make a tough call.
Will Levis to undergo shoulder surgery
In a statement shared on social media, the Titans announced:
“After consulting with doctors and his representatives, Will Levis has decided to undergo shoulder surgery that will sideline him for the entire 2025 season. We support his decision to focus on his long-term health.”
Levis looked solid during OTAs and mandatory minicamp. The initial plan was to manage the injury conservatively and rehabilitate, with surgery being the final option if progress stalled.
With training camp approaching, Levis chose to proceed with surgery, scheduled for July 29. His absence leaves Tennessee scrambling, as he was considered the most dependable option behind Ward.

With Levis sidelined, the Titans will elevate nine-year veteran Brandon Allen to the backup role, while seventh-year journeyman Tim Boyle moves up to QB3. This adds considerable pressure to Ward’s rookie campaign.
As for Levis, rumors swirled that the Titans viewed him as a potential trade asset. However, this injury derails those plans not only for 2025-but possibly beyond. Fresh off surgery for a recurring issue and entering a season on the sidelines, Levis’s value is likely to plummet.
