Will Kodai Senga return in time? Mets finalize playoff roster with big question mark

With the National League Wild Card race at its most critical point, the Mets still do not have a clear picture of what their starting rotation will look like for October. David Peterson seems to be the safest bet to start Game 1 of the Wild Card Series, but behind him, the outlook becomes murky. One of the biggest questions is the status of Kodai Senga, who began the year as a key piece, but has been sidelined by injuries and lack of consistency.

Manager Carlos Mendoza has the responsibility of putting together a rotation that is capable of competing in such a demanding scenario as the postseason. Although Senga has playoff experience as he was a key part of the team on its way to the National League Championship Series in 2024, his place on the roster is still in doubt.

Will Kodai Senga play in the 2025 postseason? This is what Carlos Mendoza said

Senga was recently sent to the minor leagues to regain his rhythm, a decision that reflects the current lack of confidence in his level. Meanwhile, rookies such as Nolan McLean have taken on important roles, although their lack of experience could be a problem in high-voltage games.

Carlos Mendoza, in statements to Associated Press, made it clear that the final decision will depend on Senga’s performance in his next start:

I think we’ll have the conversation and we’ll pick the 13 players that we think give us the best chance to win baseball games in October. The most important thing for him is to go out today and have a good performance. And then we’ll make decisions about that

Why Kodai Senga could be key for the Mets in October

Despite his inconsistent performance in 2025, Senga’s talent and experience are unquestionable, his postseason track record and dominant repertoire make him a valuable weapon for any rotation. If he can prove in the minors that he is physically ready and in good command, it would be difficult to leave him off the final roster.

On the other hand, the Mets’ depth has been affected. Beyond Peterson, there are no guaranteed arms to face high-caliber lineups. Senga represents that factor that could make the difference in a short series, but it will all depend on whether he convinces the coaching staff in time.
