Why Yankees’ history at the Winter Meetings has AL contenders on edge

The New York Yankees are once again capturing attention as the Winter Meetings get underway in Orlando, Florida, starting Monday, 8 December.

Historically, these meetings have been a platform for the team to make high-impact roster moves. Aaron Judge‘s re-signing during the 2022 Winter Meetings in San Diego is a recent example of the franchise leveraging this event.

With the American League already stacked with competitive teams, any aggressive action by the Yankees could shift the balance of power.

Other teams in the league are paying close attention to what Brian Cashman might have planned.

Cashman and the Yankees have a long track record of turning the Winter Meetings into a stage for major acquisitions.

Past signings include aces CC Sabathia and Gerrit Cole in 2008 and 2019, along with Max Fried last year on an eight-year, $218 million deal.

Trades have also played a key role, such as the 2023 deal sending Michael King to the San Diego Padres for Juan Soto and Trent Grisham.

Other notable Winter Meetings moves include acquiring Giancarlo Stanton in 2017 and Curtis Granderson in 2009.

Rivals on alert as Yankees prepare for action

The Winter Meetings are often when the Yankees make their biggest moves. While Hal Steinbrenner has discussed budget considerations, the team’s championship ambitions tend to guide its decisions.

Adding a player like Cody Bellinger, Kyle Tucker, or Alex Bregman could enhance a lineup that already features Aaron Judge and a top-tier pitching staff led by Max Fried.

Last season, Fried ranked seventh in the American League with 4.4 bWAR, just behind teammate Carlos Rodón.

The Red Sox and Blue Jays face particular concern.

Toronto has already signed Dylan Cease to a seven-year deal and is reportedly pursuing Kyle Tucker. Meanwhile, the Seattle Mariners have strengthened their roster, including a $92.5 million contract for Josh Naylor.

It is expected that the Yankees could re-sign Cody Bellinger and potentially add a reliever.

Prospect Jasson Domínguez may become trade bait if the team targets another top-tier starting pitcher.

Considering the Yankees‘ history at the Winter Meetings, any move they make is likely to draw national attention and could influence the AL playoff race significantly.
