Why Williams’ best season could be his ticket out of Dallas

Jerry Jones and company certainly have plenty of work to do this offseason. Things appear to be getting complicated for the owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys as the 2026 season approaches.

Although there is still time before the NFL returns to action this year, it is during these months that teams are built to become competitive and serious contenders for the league title.

This is where the Cowboys, a legendary franchise, must get to work seriously on assembling the roster on both sides of the ball. It is undoubtedly a titanic task for a team that has most of its budget committed to only a few players.

The Cowboys’ offense looked imposing in the 2025 season

Despite finishing with a losing record last season, the Dallas Cowboys ranked second in total yards per game with 391.9 and seventh in points per game with 27.7.

Javonte Williams’ outstanding season, with 1,201 yards from scrimmage, was vital in allowing the passing attack to shine as well, with CeeDee Lamb, despite his injuries, and newcomer George Pickens, who arrived from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In addition, Williams contributed:

  • 11 touchdowns
  • On 252 carries
  • 35 receptions
  • 137 yards
  • 2 receiving touchdowns

He finished the season ranked 20th out of 55 running backs graded by Pro Football Focus. However, despite these impressive numbers, he could still be on his way out of the team.

The probable departure of Javonte Williams from the Dallas Cowboys

Javonte Williams joined the franchise in 2025 on a one-year contract. His statistics clearly warrant a lucrative extension. The issue is that in Dallas, the salary cap would limit such a move.

There is no contract extension on the horizon, which means that starting March 11, 2026, he could enter free agency. According to Fox Sports commentator Greg Auman, his next destination could be the Arizona Cardinals.

He went to Dallas on a one-year, $3 million deal, but could get double that this time around, with good pass-catching abilities, averaging 38 receptions per season.”…”Dallas is well over the cap, so it may have a fourth leading rusher in four seasons in 2026.

Projections indicate he could land a three-year, $22 million contract, according to Spotrac. Meanwhile, Dallas is $31.5 million over the salary cap, and the running back position is not viewed as one of the team’s top priorities.

Another factor that could push him away from The Star is the team’s desire to close a deal with George Pickens, who, like Williams, arrived on a one-year agreement and would also command a costly extension.

For the Cardinals, the move would be simple because they have no financial issues, with $34.8 million available in cap space. Arizona is also in urgent need of reviving its ground attack.

During the 2025 season, the desert franchise finished second-to-last in rushing, averaging just 93.1 yards per game. That is why Javonte Williams could arrive as the solution to their offensive problems.

It would not be surprising if Jerry lets him go, believing he can find another player capable of producing at the same level Williams did.
